Ace of Spades is a capture-the-flag video game[3], though it also features many other game modes, such as Team Death Match, runningman, and Territorial Control. AoS is different from other typical FPS games in that it contains sandbox construction elements where players are able to construct defensive structures or dig trenches, among other options, to achieve the goals of the game. Game rounds are played on a map, which is randomly generated by default, although AoS supports custom maps and a map editor is included that allows for different kinds of maps to be created and used.[4] Currently, the maximum number of players allowed on a server is 32, but Ben Aksoy plans to increase the number to 64.[5] Players can choose between a rifle, submachine gun, and shotgun as a primary weapon.[6] A shovel can be used to destroy blocks, allowing players to dig tunnels, and also as a melee weapon.
At the start of a game each player spawns in their team's territory, usually somewhere near their camp tent.
Each player has four tools at his or her disposal, which are:
Ammo and health can be restocked and refilled at the HQ tent, marked by a team-colored plus sign on the map.
Players can inflict damage with firearms, grenades or the spade (starting with beta version 0.70). Grenades have a set damage radius, which is lethal from a distance of about five blocks away from a player to injuring the player at a further distances. Guns inflict fixed damage depending on the part of the body that is hit. The rifle inflicts 49 damage points to the body, 100 to the head, and 33 to the arms and legs. The submachine gun inflicts 24 damage points to the body, 75 to the head, and 16 to the arms and legs. The shotgun inflicts 19 damage points to the body, 33 to the head, and 14 to the arms and legs. However, the shotgun typically kills with one hit from an close range.
